Using New Technology to Spin and Separate Stem Cells

At the Michigan Center for Regenerative Medicine, our primary goal with any of our stem cell harvesting procedures is to get the absolute best outcome for our patients. Historically this has meant that our medical personnel has gone through extensive training to ensure that the technique we use is sufficient and that we’ve done our best when it came to using state of the art equipment to process the stem cells themselves.

New Technology Offers Additional Insight Using Cell Differentiation

The reality is that without the proper equipment, doctors have no true way to qualify what’s actually in the syringe in terms of stem cells. In the past, we’ve used a bedside machine that would spin the stem cells to separate them and then we used a laser to evaluate density to help qualify what was actually in the syringe. Previously when we were qualifying what was in the syringe we were only able to use red blood cell count to determine the quality of the cells.

Thanks to a significant investment in new lab equipment from Greyledge Technologies, The Michigan Center for Regenerative Medicine now offers a full cell differentiation with an analyzer that gives us 26 different data points so that we’re absolutely sure of what’s in the syringe that we’re using as opposed to the 1 data point using red blood cell count, which is what was the best possible option prior to this new technology being released.

Why Has The Michigan Center for Regenerative Medicine Invested in This New Technology?

The simple answer is because we’re laser focused on providing the best possible product to our patients. We’re confident that by ensuring our patients receive the best possible product, they’ll also achieve the best possible outcome, which should include a decrease in failure rates as well as an increase in length of benefit.

In the past, doctors performing stem cell harvesting procedures were primarily banking on their technique to achieve a successful outcome. While this approach was still effective, it became difficult to determine where the procedure broke down if there was a failure. Now thanks to our investment in this new laboratory technology, we’re able to offer improved results for our patients because we have all the necessary data we need to understand where and why a procedure may have experienced problems. As one of the few facilities in the entire country to have invested in this technology, we’re extremely excited to begin using it with our wonderful patients.
