What Does Your Gut Have to Do With Your Overall Health?

As functional medicine doctors in Michigan, we’re often asked about the importance of the gut and how it can impact how we feel and how we’re able to fight off disease. At the Michigan Center for Regenerative Medicine, we often discuss the importance of gut health with our patients and thought it would be a good idea to discuss it on our blog so that some of our prospective patients can think about how their gut could be impacting their overall health.

What is Gut Health?

When we refer to gut health, we’re typically describing the function of the bacteria located throughout the gastrointestinal tract. This includes vital organs like the stomach, esophagus and the intestines and how they all must work together to properly digest food without any discomfort. However, there is an estimated 70 million people just in the U.S. that deal with digestive diseases of different varieties.

Why is Gut Health Important?

A healthy digestive system is vital to a properly functioning body. There is medical proof that our gut microbacteria environment can control how we feel and act.  Dysfunction in the gut microbiota other than the obvious stomach aches can lead to:

  • Emotional issues
  • Foggy memory and thinking
  • Auto immune diseases
  • Unexplained Fatigue and weakness
  • Irritable bowel
  • Bloating
  • Nausea
  • And many more.
