Key Takeaways from Dr. John Santa Ana’s Talk at the TOBI Conference

We’re extremely proud to share some of the key takeaways from our very own Dr. John Santa Ana’s talk at the recent TOBI conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. TOBI or The Orthobiologic Institute, worked in collaboration with the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians to put on the 15th annual TOBI Orthobiologic Symposium. We were honored to have Dr. John Santa Ana share some of our positive patient outcome data with attendees.

If you’d like to learn more about Dr. John’s talk at the TOBI Conference, you can listen to a recent webinar in which Dr. Santa Ana and Dr. Nabity shared more about this talk in our most recent webinar.

Data is Growing in the World of Regenerative Medicine

Our clinic has been tracking our patient data for a number of years, and this conference continued to reiterate these findings. As published data grows in regenerative medicine, we continue to see positive patient outcomes, which can be seen in our own data registry data from our clinic. With verifiable data, knowing which procedures can be more successful is vital, especially when choosing between a PRP (platelet-rich plasma) procedure or a BMC (bone marrow concentrate) stem cell procedure, both of which have very different price points.

At the Michigan Center for Regenerative Medicine, we have been part of the DataBiologics data registry since 2019, which allows us to learn from a large subset of our own patient data which is all collected anonymously.

Dose Matters When it Comes to Regenerative Medicine Procedures

Another critical point Dr. John covered in his talk is that dose matters. There are now published data showing benchmark cell counts for various stem cell procedures in the knee, shoulder, spine, and other joints. Now that we’re tracking cell counts, we can see that patients are seeing significant improvement in function and reduction in pain at specific benchmarks. At The Michigan Center for Regenerative Medicine, we can count the number of cells we use, and we often use two to three times the number of cells where published data shows positive outcomes.

Example of How We Use Data to Steer Patients to One Type of Regenerative Medicine Procedure

The field of regenerative medicine can be quite complex, so it’s essential to use our patient outcome data to make informed decisions about what type of procedure may work best for a specific condition. Showing this in chart format should help you better understand how the doctors at The Michigan Center for Regenerative Medicine use our registry data to choose which procedure may be best for you.

The charts below show our patient outcomes for BMC (stem cell) and PRP (platelet-rich plasma) knee procedures.

Here is the graph showing improvement in function, which is the black line, and reduction in pain, which is the yellow line, from 0-12 months after the procedure.

BMC Stem Cell Knee Procedures

As you can see from our published data above, for mild knee pain, we’re seeing incredible results with PRP treatments, which are less expensive than stem cell procedures. With more severe cases, stem cell procedures are performing better for our patients. This granularity of data helps us to visually show our patients what’s working so that we can make an informed decision together to give us the best chance of a positive outcome.

We have the same level of detailed data for shoulder, spine, and other joint procedures, which helps immensely when performing patient evaluations.

Key Takeaways We Have Learned in Tracking Data from Our Patients

  • PRP procedures with over 10 billion platelets are effective for mild knee issues.
  • BMC (stem cell procedures) with more than 1.5 billion TNC (total nucleated cell count) effectively treat more severe knee cases.
  • PRP procedures with over 10 billion platelets are effective for treating the shoulder.
  • BMC procedures with over 1.5 billion TNC are effective for treating the shoulder.
  • BMC procedures with 2 billion TNC are effective for treating the spine.

Patients Need Concrete Data to Make Informed Decisions About Their Health

Without our data registry, we could never accurately publish these findings. When you go to a regenerative medicine clinic, you want to see published data that not only shows positive patient outcomes but also shows dosage. At the Michigan Center for Regenerative Medicine, we’re proud of this data, which is why we discuss it with each of our new patients.

Join Us in Congratulating Dr. John Santa Ana On His Recent Talk At the TOBI Conference

At The Michigan Center for Regenerative Medicine, we’re incredibly proud of what we do in regenerative medicine. We’re also proud that our clinic is starting to get noticed across the nation because of our commitment to tracking patient outcomes.
