Stem cell treatments are being hailed by some as a ‘cure-all’ for every ailment under the sun, but that is certainly not true. Stem cell therapies are only suitable as treatments for conditions in a manner that has to be approved by the FDA, as one stem cell clinic has found to their cost.
A clinic in Florida has been harvesting stem cells from fat tissue of their clients – as is the norm with some stem cell therapies – and claiming that they can cure all types of ailments, from heart and lung diseases to arthritis and even Parkinson’s disease. Despite zero evidence that stem cell therapy can cure every possible ailment, the clinic administered non-FDA approved treatments to patients, and sometimes with devastating consequences.
Three Patients Who Paid for Stem Cell Therapy Showed Zero Response to Their Treatments
In 2015, three patients paid to be treated for macular degenerations, which results in a slow loss of vision over time until blindness ensues. Despite the treatments, all three patients lost their vision completely.
The clinic where the stem cell therapies took place was called US Stem Cell. The FDA filed an injunction against the clinic to prevent them from offering further treatments. The clinic argued that as they were not administering FDA-approved therapies, they were exempt from FDA regulation.
Judge Decides That Processed Stem Cells are ‘Effectively’ a Drug, so FDA Compliance is Required
The judge, Ursula Ungaro, agreed with the FDA that processed stem cells could be considered a drug, and therefore US Stem Cell did indeed fall under FDA regulation. US Stem Cell is now forced to stop offering treatments that are not FDA regulated, although the clinic is currently deciding whether to appeal the decision.
