Treatment Options For TMJ

Some estimates show that more than 10 million Americans are impacted by TMJ. This is a staggering number which is why our team of Board Certified physicians here at The Michigan Center for Regenerative Medicine work hard each and every day to help our patients who are suffering from this condition. There are a whole host of treatment options for TMJ, but seeing one of our doctors can allow you to better understand the condition as well as to develop an individualized treatment plan specifically for you.

What is TMJ?

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is a joint that attaches your jaw to your skull. Individuals who suffer from TMJ disorders or TMJ pain typically have pain in the jaw joint itself as well as the muscles that control jaw movement.

The cause of TMJ can be difficult to ascertain, but you may experience TMJ pain due to factors such as a jaw injury, genetics or even arthritis. Others may experience jaw pain due to clenching or grinding their teeth.

Treatment Options For TMJ

At The Michigan Center for Regenerative Medicine we offer a number of treatment options for jaw pain. The first step before any treatment options are offered is for you to sit down with one of our doctors so that we can get a better understanding of your condition and how we can work together to bring you some much needed pain relief. Our doctors will take the time to understand your condition fully so that we can better offer the highest possible medical care.

Below are a few of the most common treatment options for TMJ:

  • Bracing – This is one of the most common treatments for TMJ. You wear a mouthpiece to help improve jaw pain.
  • Steroid Injections – Steroid injections into the joint can sometimes offer pain relief for TMJ pain.
  • Regenerative Medicine – At The Michigan Center for Regenerative Medicine, we’ve seen success with combining PRP or stem cell injections into the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and an oral appliance to help repair jaw dysfunction.
