What Should I Expect at My First Consultation?
At your first consultation, a board-certified physician reviews your pain, past treatments, surgeries, and medications, examines the area that hurts, and looks at any X-rays or MRIs you bring. You leave knowing what is likely causing your pain and which options may fit, including when regenerative treatment is not the right choice.
A little preparation helps you get the most from your time with the doctor. Use the checklist below, and bring your imaging so you can avoid repeat X-rays or MRIs.
Before your visit

Jot down your answers to these questions. They help your physician understand your pain faster.
Your pain
Is your pain constant, or does it come and go?
Note where it hurts, when it is worst, and what makes it better or worse.
Past care
What treatments have you tried?
List treatments such as physical therapy, injections, or braces, and which ones helped or did not.
Surgery
What surgeries have you had?
Include any surgery on the painful area and other past procedures.
Medications
What medications do you take?
Bring a list of current medications and ones you have taken in the past for this problem.
Checklist
What to Bring to Your Appointment
- A photo ID
- Your insurance card
- A list of current and past medications
- A list of treatments you have tried and how they worked
- Dates of any past surgeries
- X-ray or MRI reports and images related to your pain
Already had imaging? Bringing it lets your physician see a complete picture right away and can save you from having X-rays or MRIs retaken, which can be time-consuming and expensive. If more imaging is needed, your physician can order it.
During your visit
What Happens During Your Consultation
Every visit is with a board-certified physician. Most consultations follow these four steps.
Step 1
Your story
Your physician talks with you about your symptoms, history, past treatments, and goals.
Step 2
Physical exam
An exam of strength, motion, and tenderness. Diagnostic ultrasound may be used to look at tendons, ligaments, and joints.
Step 3
Imaging review
Your physician reviews your X-rays or MRI and explains what they show.
Step 4
Your options
You hear which treatments may fit, what the research shows, the limits of each, and the costs, so you can decide.
