Why Younger Stem Cells Are More Effective Than Older Ones

Exposing our patients to the incredible innovations surrounding stem cell banking and stem cell harvesting is an incredibly rewarding endeavor. One of the key points that we try to ensure our patients understand is that the earlier you harvest your stem cells, the more effective they’ll actually be when you need them.

Are Younger Stem Cells Actually More Effective?

The short answer is a resounding, yes! While there are several different types of stem cells in the bone marrow, one of the most important stem cells is the mesenchymal stem cell or MSC. MSCs have been found to have qualities that allow them to build connective and bone tissue, and also are able to provide support to the very cells that help produce our blood and immune systems. MSCs have also been shown to accelerate the healing process for injured issue.

Because of these interesting findings related to MSCs, there are currently more than 500 clinical trials focused on using MSCs for the treatment of a variety of diseases including diabetes, heart disease, Alzheimer’s, and much more.

Another interesting finding during the extensive testing that has taken place surrounding MSCs is that the younger the cells are, the more effective they can be. While the reasoning behind why this happens isn’t completely clear, there have been documented studies that show the therapeutic qualities of MSCs do diminish with age. Various studies with mice have found that treating older mice with younger MSCs produce far superior results than using age-matched MSCs.

What Does This Mean for the Stem Cell Banking Industry?

These findings have made our team here at The Michigan Center for Regenerative Medicine even more passionate about getting the word out about stem cell banking. While there are benefits to stem cell therapies regardless of your age, if you’re a young person without any health problems, you’re a prime candidate for stem cell banking because as mentioned in various studies, your younger MSCs will have a much better chance of responding to ailments that you’ll no doubt face later in life.
