Electromyogram Testing in Michigan

Electromyogram testing is an excellent diagnostic tool for evaluating the health of muscles and the nerves that control them. At the Michigan Center for Regenerative Medicine, our team uses electromyogram testing as one of our most effective diagnostic tools to get to the root cause of what is causing your pain and then apply a treatment option that will be as effective as possible. We’ll take a closer look at electromyogram testing and how it can be used to help you get answers for what is causing your chronic pain.

Why Electromyogram Testing is Often Recommended By Our Board-Certified Doctors

Electromyogram testing is a diagnostic tool often recommended for patients when other tests, such as X-rays, are unable to provide a complete picture of what is causing their pain. Using electromyogram testing, our pain management doctors can pinpoint if your pain is caused by:

  • Pinched nerves
  • Sciatica
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Peripheral neuropathy
  • And more

With this powerful diagnostic tool, our doctors will be able to identify the root cause of your pain and then recommend a treatment pathway that fights pain at its source.

What Can I Expect From Electromyogram Testing?

Electromyogram testing is a minimally invasive diagnostic test that is well tolerated by the vast majority of patients. Typically, electromyogram testing is done in two parts: a nerve conduction study and electromyography. During the nerve conduction study, small electrodes will be placed on the skin, which will administer small electrical pulses to the treatment site. These impulses help our doctors evaluate nerve speed and the strength of nerve signals. The next part of the test, electromyography, involves inserting a small needle into specific muscles in the body. The needle contains an electrode that measures muscle activity both at rest and during movement to identify abnormal muscle movements and nerve functions. The entire test takes between 30 and 60 minutes, typically, depending on the number of nerves and muscles chosen for testing. While you may experience some mild discomfort during electromyogram testing, the vast majority of patients describe it as only mildly uncomfortable.

How Electromyogram Testing Results Can Guide Your Treatment

Electromyogram results are used to both avoid unnecessary treatments and select a treatment option that is as effective as possible for your chronic pain-causing condition. Results from an electromyogram are ready immediately, and our doctors can discuss your results with you the same day so that treatment for your pain can begin as quickly as possible. We most commonly use electromyogram testing to differentiate between spinal, neural, and muscular causes of your pain. Once we have identified the cause of your pain, treatment can begin immediately, and the ideal treatment option can be chosen for your specific case of pain.

Chronic Pain Causing Conditions That Can be Diagnosed With Electromyogram Testing

Electromyogram testing is able to diagnose a number of chronic pain-causing conditions and injuries. At the Michigan Center for Regenerative Medicine, our team uses electromyogram testing to diagnose:

  • Sciatica
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Muscular weakness
  • Ulnar nerve entrapment
  • Peripheral neuropathy

This diagnostic tool helps our doctors help you avoid unnecessary treatments and prioritize the most effective ones.
