While you may have heard of the term platelet rich plasma or PRP as it relates to regenerative medicine, you may be surprised to know that it can also be used to treat hair loss as well. PRP treatment is based on the two main components of blood plasma: platelets and white blood cells. Both of these components contain growth factors which help to stimulate skin cells and cause them to function better and in turn grow new hair. PRP for hair loss allows hair follicles to be stimulated to grow new hair.
The Michigan Center for Regenerative Medicine now offers PRP hair restoration as a non-invasive way to promote natural hair growth for men and women.
The PRP Hair Restoration Process
When you come into our regenerative medicine clinic for a procedure, we’ll first draw blood and then take the blood into our lab and separate the PRP which will then be injected into your scalp to promote hair growth. We typically recommend a protocol of 6 PRP hair loss treatments and most of our clients begin to notice improvements after 3-4 treatments.
PRP treatments typically take between 30 minutes and 1 hour and we recommend that our patients take warm showers after the procedure to help improve circulation and blood flow to the scalp.
Am I a Good Candidate for PRP Hair Restoration?
If you’re just beginning to experience hair loss, you’re likely an ideal candidate for PRP treatments. The longer you wait, the less effective the treatment may be. If you have had significant balding for quite some time, PRP treatments may not be a good option for you.
PRP Hair Restoration Results
The results of PRP treatments vary completely by individual, but one of the first things a patient will notice is less hair shedding. This is often followed by an increased length of hair and additional regrowth. It’s important to keep in mind that PRP is often a part of a program that’s created to help deal with hair loss and/or hair thinning.
