What is EMG testing and why is it used?

EMG, or electromyography, measures how your nerves and muscles respond and work together, unlike X-rays that show anatomy. At the Michigan Center for Regenerative Medicine, board-certified physicians use EMG results to find nerve irritation, compression, or damage, tell whether symptoms start in the spine or peripheral nerves, and guide treatment choices.

The energy used by our muscles comes from other sources, but the signals that tell our muscles what to do are in fact electrical.

This could be the result of damage, deterioration, or disease. EMG testing can detect many conditions, including pinched nerves, peripheral nerve damage, disc herniation, muscular dystrophy, and others.

If a patient complains of weakness in a muscle or a group of muscles, then EMG testing is one diagnostic option. It detects issues in the nerves rather than the muscles themselves. What Are The Signs I May Need EMG Testing?

Your doctor may recommend EMG testing if you’re experiencing any of the following symptoms:

Extreme Pain (including tingling or radiating pain)
Fatigue
Neuropathy
Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Numbness

During the procedure, your skin will be wiped with harmless alcohol wipes. This is to ensure proper connectivity and signal transference. The test consists of two parts. The first is a nerve conduction study where electrodes are placed on your skin’s surface, and electrical pulses are generated. The second is electromyography, where a small thin needle is inserted just beneath your skin to measure the electrical signals transmitted to the affected muscle.

Once EMG testing is over, you may experience slight discomfort, but not at sufficient levels to affect your normal daily activities. If you experience pain at the point of needle insertion, then applying ice (not directly) to the area will deaden the soreness and reduce the chances of inflammation. You should find that after ten to fifteen minutes of ice application, all discomfort sensations will have been resolved.

The results generated by EMG testing should be ready in three to five business days and will be forwarded to the person responsible for your primary health care. I was having serious SI joint flares for a few months and was having a hard time working because of the pain and inability to walk very well.
