“After a series of facet and nerve blocking without feeling much improvement, I was referred to Dr. Nabity, who was very caring and supportive. I’ve been seeing Dr. Nabity for over a year and a half. I was suffering from very bad chronic pain after my car accident. He is one of the best doctors I have been to. He listens to the issues I have and works out a plan with me. He takes the time to explain what is going on and helps me understand. He also has a great sense of humor. He recommended the PRP (platelet rich plasma) injections. After the first sets of injections I was able to feel the improvement. I have done the PRP injections 3 times so far and it’s been helpful. I’m very happy with his care and concern for my well-being. I would highly recommend Dr. Nabity.” – Rosanna K. Sterling Heights, MI

Treatments That Benefit From EMG Testing
EMG testing is just the first step on your healing journey and will likely inform the doctor of the type of treatment you will need to receive. Here at The Michigan Center for Regenerative Medicine, we have several options available to help your body heal naturally and avoid the need to undergo surgery.
Prolotherapy is a non-surgical ligament and tendon reconstruction and regenerative joint injection. Nerve pain stimulation works similarly to EMG testing and stimulates the nerves via electricity. Stem cells are a productive and relatively new procedure, which acts as a natural catalyst that uses your body’s own cellular building blocks to recover damaged tissues.
“The treatment that I received from Dr. Nabity was life changing. I am a member in the military and due to a back injury that I sustained in the military. I was presented with the choice to either have back surgery or get out of the military. Dr. Nabity treated my back with Platelet Rich Plasma Therapy and results have been amazing. My disc herniation’s have decreased to half the size and I am able to work out and run again. I have since been able to stay in the military continue to serve. I could not hold Dr. Nabity in higher regards he literally saved my career and increased my quality of life tenfold.” – Nick Port Huron, MI
How An EMG Procedure Works
So, what can a Dearborn, MI resident expect from EMG testing? Intended to test the responsiveness of the electrical signals sent from your brain to the muscle nerves, EMG tests are minimally invasive and require a few injections to insert electrically sensitive needles. Still, they do not cause much pain and often don’t require pain management before or after the procedure. Once the electrodes are inserted, the doctor will likely ask you to flex and move around the offending muscle to test the electrical conductivity of the nerves as the brain sends signals. As our muscles do not conduct electric signals while at rest, movement is vital, and you may be asked to do several different movements for an accurate reading. EMG testing can take anywhere from 60 to 90 minutes, depending on the responsiveness of your muscles.
After EMG testing, you may experience some soreness in the affected muscles. This soreness is normal and should not require any further treatment. In extreme cases, you may want to take over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications to help with recovery, but nothing else will be needed.

By Michigan Center of Regenerative Medicine – Thomas Nabity, MD and John Santa, DO, Board-certified physicians
“In my late 30’s I started to notice a gradual hair loss that accelerated in my early 40’s. I looked into different transplant techniques and all seemed fairly invasive and expensive. I thought I’d give PRP a try because the science made sense to me and the cost was a fraction of other treatments. 3 months after my first treatment I noticed significant regrowth and after about 6 months the results have been amazing. I’ve had quite a few friends ask me what I did, and I’ve happily referred them on to Dr. Nabity. He explained everything in detail and comforting in his approach.” – Scott Rockford, IL

Frequently Asked Questions About Functional Medicine
What is functional medicine?
Functional medicine is a patient-centered, science-based approach that focuses on identifying and addressing the root causes of disease, rather than just treating symptoms.
How is functional medicine different from conventional medicine?
Unlike conventional medicine, which often focuses on diagnosis and medication, functional medicine looks at the whole person, including lifestyle, genetics, and environmental factors to find the underlying causes of illness.
What conditions can functional medicine help with?
Functional medicine can help with chronic conditions like autoimmune diseases, digestive issues, hormonal imbalances, allergies, mental health disorders, metabolic syndrome, chronic pain, and more.
Is functional medicine evidence-based?
Yes, functional medicine uses current scientific research and evidence to inform its approaches, though it often incorporates nutrition, lifestyle, and holistic therapies.
What does a functional medicine doctor do?
They spend time with patients, listening to their histories, examining genetic deficiencies, and use a systems-oriented approach to identify the root causes of health issues.
What is the functional medicine timeline?
It’s a tool practitioners use to map out a patient’s health history, including triggers, genetics, and life events, to identify patterns and causes. From there, a detailed treatment plan gets developed to optimize results.
What are common functional medicine tests?
Tests may include advanced blood panels, stool analysis, hormone testing, food sensitivity tests, genetic tests, and more.
Is functional medicine safe?
Yes, when practiced by licensed professionals, it’s generally safe. It emphasizes non-invasive and natural interventions.
How long does it take to see results?
It varies by individual and condition. Some people feel better in weeks; others may take months.
Does insurance cover functional medicine?
Some tests and visits may be covered, but many functional medicine services are considered out-of-pocket.
