Treatment for Knee Pain Michigan

Treatment for Knee Pain Michigan

Knee pain is a common type of chronic pain in the United States, affecting everyone from older adults to young athletes. Patients can develop knee pain from medical conditions like osteoarthritis over time or can suffer a traumatic injury to the knee that can bring both immediate and lasting pain. At the Michigan Center for Regenerative Medicine, we use modern regenerative medicine treatments to help patients treat knee pain at the source to decrease pain and increase mobility. Let’s look at regenerative medicine treatments and how they can help Michigan patients struggling with knee pain.

What is Regenerative Medicine And How Can It Effectively Treatment Knee Pain?

Regenerative medicine is a modern field that seeks to restore function to damaged tissues and cells. This approach makes regenerative medicine a practical option for patients who are dealing with pain, looking to regain their mobility, and looking to avoid risky surgery or a lifetime of powerful medications. There are several different types of regenerative medicine treatments for knee pain. Still, the most common ones we do for patients at the Michigan Center for Regenerative Medicine include platelet-rich plasma therapy, mesenchymal stem cell therapy, and hyaluronic acid injections.

Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy for Knee Pain in Michigan

Platelet-rich plasma therapy (PRP) is a minimally invasive treatment for knee pain that uses a patient’s platelets and plasma to stimulate a healing response in the knee. Patients who get platelet-rich plasma therapy will have their blood painlessly drawn before placing it in a centrifuge. This centrifuge then spins the blood at high speeds, forcing the platelets and plasma to separate from other components in the blood. Once this process is completed, this platelet-rich plasma serum is injected into the treatment site, which stimulates the body’s natural healing response. Unlike knee surgery, which comes with the risk of complications, or powerful medications that come with an increased risk of side effects, platelet-rich plasma therapy is exceptionally well tolerated and a minimally invasive treatment option. Platelet-rich plasma therapy may be a good choice for patients who are dealing with knee pain caused by trauma or overuse injuries or those who are living with a chronic condition like osteoarthritis.

Mesenchymal Stem Cell Therapy for Knee Pain in Michigan

Like platelet-rich plasma therapy, stem cell therapy aims to replace or regenerate damaged tissues in the knee to provide patients with adequate pain relief and increased mobility. With stem cell therapy, a patient’s mesenchymal stem cells are painlessly harvested from bone marrow before being injected into the treatment site. Stem cells are unique cells in the body that can become cells that make up several different tissues, like bone, cartilage, or muscle. For patients who are dealing with knee pain caused by damaged tissues of the knee, mesenchymal stem cell therapy can be an effective and minimally invasive treatment option. Stem cell therapy can be used to treat knee pain caused by osteoarthritis, ligament injuries, and meniscus tears, as well as for patients recovering from knee surgery.

Hyaluronic Acid Injections for Knee Pain in Michigan

Hyaluronic acid is naturally produced by the body to serve as a lubricant and shock absorber for the body’s joints. Hyaluronic acid injections are an excellent treatment option for patients who have knee pain caused by joint issues like osteoarthritis. They also have the added benefit of reducing inflammation in the knee and may work to prevent further degeneration of cartilage in the knee.
