Do medical students train at Michigan Center for Regenerative Medicine?
Yes. Medical students, physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) residents and sports medicine fellows request rotations at Michigan Center for Regenerative Medicine to learn regenerative medicine from experienced, board-certified physicians. Dr. Thomas Nabity is an assistant professor at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine, Dr. John Santa Ana is an assistant professor at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine, and both teach for the Interventional Orthobiologics Foundation.
PRP (platelet-rich plasma) and orthobiologics using bone marrow cells and lipoaspirate are becoming more common treatment options for a variety of musculoskeletal conditions. That is good news for patients and for our team of board-certified physicians. Because more clinics and facilities now offer PRP injections and other orthobiologic procedures, it’s more important than ever to know how to compare providers. At Michigan Center for Regenerative Medicine, every one of our physicians is board-certified.
Where medical students choose to train
Over the past several years, medical students, PM&R residents and sports medicine fellows have taken notice of our experience and begun requesting rotations at our clinic. Medical students must complete required rotations such as internal medicine, pediatrics, emergency medicine and radiology, and they can also choose electives to learn more about a specialty they’re considering. Many are choosing our clinic for their regenerative medicine elective. Recent students have come from schools including:
- Michigan State University College of Human Medicine
- University of Michigan Medical School
- Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine
- West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine
- Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine
- Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine
- Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM)
- Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine
This steady interest shows that regenerative medicine is a growing field and that our clinic offers a unique elective, where students can learn from a large group of experienced regenerative medicine physicians.
Assistant professors in the exam room
Because of our close ties with medical schools, two of our physicians have been given academic titles in recognition of their teaching. Dr. Thomas Nabity is an assistant professor at Oakland University William Beaumont School of Medicine, and Dr. John Santa Ana is an assistant professor at Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine.
These appointments reflect our clinic’s connection with medical schools in Michigan and beyond, and they can give patients added confidence when choosing where to discuss whether regenerative medicine may be a good fit for their condition.
Instructors for the Interventional Orthobiologics Foundation (IOF)
Our founding physicians, Dr. Nabity and Dr. Santa Ana, are also instructors for the Interventional Orthobiologics Foundation (IOF). Physician education is one of the IOF’s core goals, so it’s fitting that our doctors teach for this leading organization in the field. Read about their recent trip to teach at IOF MAX 2026.
What teaching means for your care
Teaching benefits both physicians and their patients. Students and trainees ask hard questions, and doctors are expected to explain the reasoning behind every treatment option. That habit carries into the exam room: when you have detailed questions before a procedure, our physicians are used to explaining their reasoning clearly. Teaching also keeps our physicians engaged with the latest research and techniques in orthobiologics.
