What causes elbow, wrist, and hand pain?
Repetitive gripping from work, golf, tennis, or pickleball can overload the tendons of the elbow and wrist, causing problems such as tennis elbow and tendinitis. Nerve problems such as carpal tunnel syndrome can also cause hand pain and numbness. Our physicians find the cause first, then discuss options such as PRP, prolotherapy, or EMG testing.
Elbow, Wrist & Hand Pain Treatment
Your elbows, wrists, and hands do a lot of repetitive work: typing, lifting, gripping tools, and swinging a golf club, tennis racket, or pickleball paddle. Over time, that load can overwhelm the tendons and cause lasting pain, weakness, and trouble gripping.
Board-certified physicians at our Rochester Hills and Grand Rapids offices evaluate tendon, joint, and nerve problems of the elbow, wrist, and hand and explain the non-surgical options that may help.
How Treatment Works

Your physician examines your grip, strength, and motion and may use diagnostic ultrasound to look at the tendons. When numbness or tingling suggests a nerve problem such as carpal tunnel syndrome, EMG testing helps confirm the cause.
- PRP: concentrated platelets from your own blood, often used for tennis elbow and other chronic tendon problems.
- Prolotherapy: a dextrose solution that prompts a healing response in weakened ligaments and tendons.
- Activity and grip changes: a rehab plan that gradually loads the tendon and adjusts how you grip at work or in your sport.
Who May Be a Good Candidate?
You may be a good candidate if elbow, wrist, or hand tendon pain has lasted for months and rest, bracing, physical therapy, or cortisone shots have not given lasting relief. Severe nerve compression or a complete tendon rupture may need a surgical opinion, and your physician will tell you if that is the case. See also joint pain treatment.

FAQ
Elbow, Wrist & Hand Questions
Answers to common questions from our patients. Your physician can address your specific situation during a consultation.
What is tennis elbow?
Pain on the outside of the elbow from overloaded forearm tendons, often from repetitive gripping.
Can PRP help tennis elbow?
PRP is one of the better-studied options for chronic tennis elbow. It may help some patients, especially alongside rehab. Results vary.
What causes hand numbness and tingling?
Nerve problems such as carpal tunnel syndrome are common causes. EMG testing helps confirm the source.
Do you offer EMG testing?
Yes. EMG and nerve testing help find the cause of numbness, tingling, or weakness.
Are the injections image-guided?
Yes. Our physicians use ultrasound guidance to place treatment in the tendon.
How long is recovery?
Most patients return to light use soon after, then follow a gradual rehab plan over several weeks.
Does insurance cover treatment?
EMG testing and some conventional injections can be billed to insurance. Regenerative treatments are usually self-pay.
Will I need to stop playing my sport?
Usually only for a short time. Your physician will give you a plan to return gradually.
