What causes hip pain, and how can regenerative medicine help?
Hip pain can come from arthritis inside the joint, irritated tendons or bursa on the outside of the hip, or the low back. After a careful exam and imaging review, our physicians may recommend non-surgical options such as PRP, bone marrow (stem cell) treatment, or prolotherapy, placed with image guidance. Results vary.
Hip Pain Treatment Without Surgery
Hip pain can make walking, climbing stairs, sleeping on your side, and getting in and out of the car harder. It can come from several places: arthritis inside the joint, irritated tendons or bursa on the outside of the hip, or the low back. Because the treatment depends on the source, a careful exam comes first.
Board-certified physicians at our Rochester Hills and Grand Rapids offices evaluate hip pain and explain the non-surgical options that may help, along with the honest limits of each. Read more about hip pain causes, treatment, and prevention.
How Hip Treatment Works

Your physician reviews your symptoms, examines your hip’s strength and motion, and reviews X-rays or MRI. Diagnostic ultrasound can show the tendons and bursa on the outside of the hip.
- PRP: concentrated platelets from your own blood, used for hip tendon problems and some arthritis.
- Bone marrow (BMAC) treatment: your own bone marrow cells, concentrated and placed in the same visit, for selected hip arthritis.
- Prolotherapy: a dextrose solution that prompts a healing response in weakened ligaments and tendons.
Deep hip joint treatments are placed with fluoroscopic (x-ray) or ultrasound guidance so they reach the right spot. Most plans also include strengthening to support the hip.
Who May Be a Good Candidate?
You may be a good candidate if hip pain from arthritis, bursitis, or a tendon problem limits your daily activities, and rest, physical therapy, or medication have not given lasting relief. Severe arthritis with major joint collapse may be better served by hip replacement, and your physician will tell you if that is the case. Learn whether stem cell therapy can help you avoid hip replacement.
