What is functional medicine at MCRM?

Functional medicine is a whole-person, individualized approach that looks for the underlying causes of pain and health problems instead of only treating symptoms. At the Michigan Center for Regenerative Medicine, registered nurses Haley and Kailee Sardelli, co-founders of Lumora Functional Health, lead the program, and every visit happens by telehealth.

It can be incredibly frustrating to live with unresolved answers to medical symptoms that continue to come back after treatment. For many patients, an approach that treats not only their symptoms but also the underlying condition causing their health problems is key to maximizing their treatment success. At the Michigan Center for Regenerative Medicine, our team of Pontiac functional medicine doctors works hand-in-hand with our patients to find them answers and effective treatments for their health concerns. If you’re interested in learning more about functional medicine in Michigan, continue reading to discover the benefits this type of treatment offers to our Pontiac patients.

Treating More Than Just Symptoms With Functional Medicine for Pontiac Patients

An older couple with backpacks sits in a forest with their golden retriever.

One of the core philosophies of functional medicine is treating not just your symptoms but also correcting the root cause responsible for them. Functional medicine employs a systems-based approach to healthcare, viewing the body as a series of interconnected systems, to provide treatments that address all areas of your health affected by your symptoms. This includes examining how the:

  • Digestive system
  • Hormones
  • Immune system
  • Metabolism

work together and how each is affected by chronic medical conditions or illnesses. For many patients, this approach of treating more than just symptoms alone is an excellent way to both treat their symptoms and improve their overall health, and prevent symptoms from returning if possible.

Root Causes Functional Medicine Identifies

Since the core of functional medicine treatments begins with identifying the root cause of your symptoms, it is helpful to know what functional medicine doctors will examine during your evaluation. Typically, functional medicine doctors in Pontiac will look at several of the body’s systems for different concerns, including:

  • Inflammation
  • Hormonal imbalances
  • Gut dysfunction
  • Nutritional gaps and deficiencies
  • Metabolic dysfunction

Once areas of concern and root causes have been identified, our functional medicine doctors can recommend a treatment that they believe is appropriate for your health and personal health goals.

Medical Conditions That Can Be Treated With Functional Medicine

A man at home has a video consultation with a doctor from a Michigan pain clinic on his laptop to discuss chronic pain treatment.

Functional medicine treatments can be used to treat a wide range of medical conditions. Some of the conditions we treat most commonly in our Pontiac patients include:

  • Digestive disorders
  • Thyroid imbalances
  • Fatigue and sleep disruption
  • Weight management
  • Auto-immune related conditions

Often, health problems that patients experience can be attributed to one or more underlying causes. For example, a patient who is struggling with their weight may have a digestive disorder and a hormonal imbalance that both need to be corrected to help them maintain a healthy weight. By identifying the root cause of a patient’s weight-loss struggles, our functional medicine doctors can provide the knowledge and guidance they need to achieve their health goals.

Affordable Functional Medicine Doctors

At the Michigan Center for Regenerative Medicine, we strive to make our functional medicine treatments as accessible and affordable as possible for our patients in Pontiac. All of our treatments, including our functional medicine treatment plans, are priced competitively so that money doesn’t get in the way of your health. Contact our team today to see for yourself just how affordable functional medicine treatments can be!

Dr. Robert Farhat is extremely professional, educational & most of all cares about his patients. I went there for a tear in my shoulder, had platelet replacement therapy/surgery. (I had struggled for 6 months before this, going to PT, etc. no luck, and I did not want regular surgery.) I am back to lifting weights as prior to my injury, hiking etc. I am a True believer in this type of medical procedure!

Dr. Nabity is awesome! He spent over an hour with my husband and me going over my MRI’s for hip issues and all other information. He explained everything about PRP and answered all my questions. While we were there, he even checked out my husband’s hip problem too and gave him suggestions as well. I am very pleased with the plan of action we chose together. Looking forward to healing!!

This is only a review for the first consultation. I met with Dr. Santa Anna and I was very impressed with his ability to explain my options after looking at my previous MRI's and also doing ultra sound on my shoulder. I did not feel any pressure and he gave me multiple options with his opinion on what would be the best option. I have not gotten any procedures yet and will update after I do. This is for those that might be nervous about going here for their first consultation.

After years of enduring excruciating pain and sleepless nights, I found relief at the Michigan Center For Regenerative Medicine. Chronic back and shoulder discomfort had taken a toll on my well-being, leaving me fatigued and irritable. My family even nicknamed me "Shrek" due to my constant agony. However, thanks to the expert care I received at the center, I've experienced a remarkable transformation. Following treatment for my back and shoulder, I am now able to lift my arm over my head—a simple task that had eluded me for years. Today, I am no longer plagued by pain and misery, and I finally find myself living a life filled with happiness and comfort. (from Tom Lints)

I was having serious SI joint flares for a few months and was having a hard time working because of the pain and inability to walk very well. I then started physical therapy but was not able to do my exercises very well because of the pain. I heard about PRP and contacted the Michigan Center for Regenerative Medicine. I was able to get PRP done the next week and it was a life saver! I truly thought I was never going to be the same again. All the staff and Doctor Santa Ana were super kind and helpful during the procedure. I felt better right away and have not had a flare since the procedure. I am so thankful and recommend this to anyone with severe pain!
