Causes of Knee Pain and Decreased Range of Motion
A wide variety of conditions can cause knee pain and decreased range of motion of the knee. To decide which regenerative medicine treatment is the best for your knee pain, our knee pain doctors will first determine the root cause of your knee pain. The most common cause of knee pain we see in our patients is arthritis of the knee. While there are several types of arthritis, the three most common causes of knee pain are osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout. Let’s take a look at these three types of arthritis, how they cause knee pain, and how regenerative medicine treatments can help.
Osteoarthritis of the Knee: Osteoarthritis, also known as degenerative arthritis, is a degenerative condition that causes the cartilage of the knee to break down over time. As this cartilage breaks down, it causes the bones of the knee to rub together, causing pain, swelling, and a decreased range of motion. While older adults are the most common group affected by osteoarthritis of the knee, younger adults can develop osteoarthritis from repetitive stress on the knee, genetics, and excessive body weight. Patients with osteoarthritis of the knee describe the condition as:
- Causing pain with movement
- Causing swelling of the knee
- Causing stiffness in the knee
Osteoarthritis of the knee can be effectively treated with regenerative medicine treatments like platelet-rich plasma therapy and stem cell therapy.
Rheumatoid Arthritis: Rheumatoid arthritis, also known as RA, differs from other forms of arthritis in that it is an autoimmune disorder that causes the immune system to attack the lining of the membrane that surrounds the joints. RA causes a range of symptoms in patients, but the most common ones reported include:
- Pain and swelling of the joints
- Morning stiffness
- Fatigue or lack of energy
- Warmth and redness of joints
- Decreased mobility
Rheumatoid arthritis can develop at any age but most commonly begins between the ages of 30-50. Smokers have an increased risk of developing RA, and smoking can make the disease worse. While there are no cures for RA, regenerative medicine treatments can help manage the pain and decreased mobility that comes with the disease.
Gout: Gout is a type of arthritis that is caused by a build-up of uric acid in the blood that accumulates as urate crystals in the body’s joints. While it commonly presents in the big toe, it can develop in the knee. Gout is characterized by:
- Sudden severe pain in the knees
- Swelling of the knees
- Limited range of motion of affected knees
Risk factors for gout include:
- A diet high in red meat, seafood, alcohol, and soft drinks
- Kidney disease reduces the excretion of uric acid
- Obesity increases uric acid production
- A family history of gout
The Michigan Center for Regenerative Medicine has excellent regenerative medicine treatments to reduce pain associated with gout of the knee.
