What is PRP treatment?
Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is prepared from a sample of your own blood. Processing concentrates platelets, which contain growth factors and other proteins involved in the body’s response to injury. The prepared PRP is injected into a selected treatment area when clinically appropriate. Its potential usefulness depends on the diagnosis, and research findings vary.
PRP Treatment for Traverse City Patients
Pain can change how you work, sleep, exercise, and enjoy Northern Michigan. When persistent symptoms interfere with everyday life, understanding your options matters.
For people researching PRP treatment in Traverse City, MI, the Michigan Center for Regenerative Medicine offers physician-led evaluations and individualized treatment planning at its Grand Rapids and Rochester Hills offices. The practice combines regenerative orthobiologics, pain management, and functional medicine approaches to help patients understand their chronic pain conditions and consider appropriate next steps.
Successful treatment planning begins with identifying the cause of your symptoms. Knee pain after exercise, shoulder discomfort following an accident, and numbness associated with neuropathy may require very different approaches. The first step is understanding the problem before recommending a procedure.
Experienced Physicians and Coordinated Support
Choosing a medical practice involves more than choosing a procedure. Experience, clinical judgment, communication, and follow-up all matter.
Locally owned and operated in Michigan, the Michigan Center for Regenerative Medicine brings more than 17 years of experience in regenerative orthobiologics, pain management, and functional medicine.
Our board-certified physicians include Kevin M. Nemeth, MD, and Christopher Hannasch, DO, who see patients at our Grand Rapids office Monday through Friday, along with Thomas Nabity, MD; Robert Farhat, DO; John Steele, MD; and John Santa Ana, DO.
Nurses and other medical professionals help patients move through evaluation, treatment preparation, and follow-up with clearer expectations. You can discuss physician qualifications, procedure details, and aftercare before deciding whether to proceed. Questions are welcome; understanding your care is part of participating in it.
How PRP Treatment Works

Platelet-rich plasma, commonly called PRP, is prepared from a sample of your own blood. The sample is processed to concentrate platelets, which contain growth factors and other proteins involved in the body’s response to injury.
If PRP is part of your plan, treatment usually follows four steps:
- Blood draw. A small sample of your blood is collected at the clinic.
- Preparation. The sample is processed to concentrate platelets within a portion of the plasma.
- Image-guided injection. Our physicians use ultrasound or fluoroscopic imaging to help guide the injection toward the intended treatment area.
- Aftercare and follow-up. You receive guidance on activity, rehabilitation, and check-ins to track your progress.
Ultrasound provides real-time images of many soft-tissue structures. Fluoroscopy uses X-ray imaging and may be selected for other anatomical targets. Your physician determines which approach is appropriate. Image guidance supports accurate placement, but it does not guarantee symptom relief; your diagnosis, overall health, tissue condition, and rehabilitation plan also influence the potential outcome.
PRP should not be described as a guaranteed cure, a way to reverse arthritis, or a method for regrowing cartilage. An informed consultation should explain the potential benefits, limitations, risks, alternatives, and expected costs.
Who May Be a Good Candidate for PRP?
PRP may be considered for selected orthopedic problems, including some tendon problems and joint-related symptoms. People who often ask about it include:
- Adults with persistent tendon or joint-related symptoms that limit work, exercise, or sleep
- Active people whose sports injury keeps interrupting their routine
- Some patients with knee osteoarthritis who want to discuss non-surgical options
- People still dealing with musculoskeletal pain after an auto accident
These conditions are not interchangeable, and neither are their treatments. PRP is not an established solution for every painful condition. Neuropathy, in particular, requires evaluation of the underlying cause and appropriate medical management, and spinal disc degeneration calls for careful evaluation before any procedure is recommended.
The practice also offers prolotherapy, autologous stem cell-based procedures, pain management, and functional medicine approaches. Availability does not mean every procedure suits every patient: many stem cell interventions marketed for orthopedic conditions remain investigational and are not FDA-approved for those uses. Physical therapy, activity modification, medication, specialist referral, or surgery may also deserve consideration.
What to Expect: Recovery and Results

Treatment is only one part of care. Depending on the procedure and diagnosis, recommendations may include temporary activity restrictions, a gradual return to exercise, or coordinated rehabilitation.
Temporary soreness, bruising, or swelling may occur after an injection. Infection, bleeding, and injury to surrounding structures are additional potential risks. Recovery timelines vary, and improvement, when it occurs, may develop gradually rather than immediately.
PRP Cost and Insurance
Some procedures or related medical services may be covered by insurance. Coverage depends on your plan, diagnosis, treatment, and applicable authorization requirements. PRP and other regenerative procedures may involve out-of-pocket expenses.
Ask for an explanation of anticipated charges before treatment, confirm benefits directly with your insurer, and clarify whether consultations, imaging, procedures, and follow-up appointments are billed separately. Our team can help you understand the estimate. Learn more about PRP treatment cost in Michigan.

FAQ
PRP Treatment Questions
Answers to common questions from Traverse City and Northern Michigan patients. Your physician can address your specific situation during a consultation.
How is PRP prepared?
A small sample of your own blood is drawn and processed to concentrate platelets within a portion of the plasma. The prepared PRP is then injected into a selected treatment area when clinically appropriate.
Are the injections image-guided?
Yes. Our physicians use ultrasound or fluoroscopic imaging guidance to help visualize anatomy and guide placement. Guidance supports accurate placement, but it does not guarantee symptom relief.
How many PRP sessions will I need?
It depends on your diagnosis and treatment plan. Some patients may be offered a single procedure; others may be offered additional sessions. Your physician explains the recommended schedule after your evaluation.
How much does PRP cost?
There is no single price for every PRP procedure. The treatment area, number of areas treated, recommended schedule, imaging guidance, and any testing can affect the total. Request an itemized estimate after your evaluation.
Is PRP covered by insurance?
Coverage varies by insurer, policy, diagnosis, and procedure. PRP for many orthopedic conditions is commonly self-pay, and coverage for an office visit does not mean the injection is covered.
What are the possible side effects?
Temporary soreness, bruising, or swelling may occur. Infection, bleeding, and injury to surrounding structures are additional potential risks. Your care team explains each step and aftercare before you decide.
How soon may I notice improvement?
Improvement, when it occurs, may develop gradually rather than immediately, and results vary from person to person. Follow-up visits help track your progress.
Can PRP help neuropathy or disc degeneration?
These are not automatically PRP indications. Neuropathy calls for evaluation of the underlying cause and appropriate medical management, and spinal disc degeneration requires careful evaluation. Your physician may recommend other treatments or a referral.
Do I need to travel more than once?
Often, yes. A consultation, the procedure, and follow-up may be separate visits. Ask your care team how to plan visits and whether some follow-up can be coordinated closer to home.
Which clinic is closest to Traverse City?
