What is EMG testing and why is it used?

EMG, or electromyography, measures how your nerves and muscles respond and work together, unlike X-rays that show anatomy. At the Michigan Center for Regenerative Medicine, board-certified physicians use EMG results to find nerve irritation, compression, or damage, tell whether symptoms start in the spine or peripheral nerves, and guide treatment choices.

EMG testing near Troy, MI, is a procedure used to assess the condition of muscles and the nerve cells known as motor neurons that control them. The motor neurons are located in the brain, brainstem, and spinal cord. They send signals to the fibers within the body’s muscles that will cause them to contract. EMG testing near Troy, MI, can help diagnose problems with nerves or muscles by showing how effectively the nerve-to-muscle signals are being transmitted.

EMG testing near Troy, MI – What is Involved and How it Works

A smiling man wearing a hooded vest and a backpack outdoors.

EMG testing near Troy, MI, uses tiny electrodes to measure nerve signals. These signals can be translated into numbers, sounds, or graphs, which can be looked at by a neurologic specialist. There are usually two parts to the test; the first, where electrodes are placed on the skin’s surface, and the second, where fine needles are inserted directly into the muscles.

EMG testing can be used as a useful diagnostic tool when specific physical ailments are becoming a problem. These could include particular types of muscle pain, especially in the arms or legs. Other issues that EMG testing could be helpful as a diagnostic tool include muscle weakness, cramping, or sensations of tingling or numbness.

There are several muscle-related conditions that EMG testing could either help confirm or rule out, including:

  • Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (motor neuron disease or Lou Gehrig’s disease)
  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Herniated discs
  • Muscular dystrophy
  • Myasthenia gravis
  • Peripheral neuropathy
  • Polymyositis
  • Polio

How You Will Experience EMG Testing Near Troy, MI

You can do things as you usually do them in your day-to-day life before your EMG test, but the areas of your skin around the muscle(s) that are to be tested must be kept free from oils, creams, or lotions as such substances may affect the efficiency of the test.

Before the test commences, you may be asked to change into more suitable clothing for the process. The person conducting the test will then place the electrodes on your skin in relevant areas. If the needle electrode test is to be undertaken (which it often is), then thin needles will be inserted into your muscles. You will experience slight discomfort as the needles are inserted, but the pain levels are minimal as the needles are so thin.

During EMG testing you may experience twinges in your muscles. You will be asked to lie still; then, you will be asked to use the muscles that are being tested.

Once your EMG testing session is over, you may experience slight bruising around the areas where the electrodes were inserted. This is due to the blood from broken blood vessels and capillaries leaking into the tissue beneath your skin, which is perfectly natural. The bruising will fade away after a few days.

It will be left to a medical professional to interpret the results of your EMG testing session, and a report will be prepared, which will then be passed on to your primary care physician, who will then discuss the results with you and what treatments may be of benefit to you, moving forward.

When EMG Testing Is Recommended

  • Persistent numbness or tingling
  • Weakness in the arms or legs
  • Pain that radiates from the neck or lower back
  • Symptoms that worsen with movement or activity
  • Little improvement with rest, medication, or therapy

Dr. Robert Farhat is extremely professional, educational & most of all cares about his patients. I went there for a tear in my shoulder, had platelet replacement therapy/surgery. (I had struggled for 6 months before this, going to PT, etc. no luck, and I did not want regular surgery.) I am back to lifting weights as prior to my injury, hiking etc. I am a True believer in this type of medical procedure!

Dr. Nabity is awesome! He spent over an hour with my husband and me going over my MRI’s for hip issues and all other information. He explained everything about PRP and answered all my questions. While we were there, he even checked out my husband’s hip problem too and gave him suggestions as well. I am very pleased with the plan of action we chose together. Looking forward to healing!!

This is only a review for the first consultation. I met with Dr. Santa Anna and I was very impressed with his ability to explain my options after looking at my previous MRI's and also doing ultra sound on my shoulder. I did not feel any pressure and he gave me multiple options with his opinion on what would be the best option. I have not gotten any procedures yet and will update after I do. This is for those that might be nervous about going here for their first consultation.

After years of enduring excruciating pain and sleepless nights, I found relief at the Michigan Center For Regenerative Medicine. Chronic back and shoulder discomfort had taken a toll on my well-being, leaving me fatigued and irritable. My family even nicknamed me "Shrek" due to my constant agony. However, thanks to the expert care I received at the center, I've experienced a remarkable transformation. Following treatment for my back and shoulder, I am now able to lift my arm over my head—a simple task that had eluded me for years. Today, I am no longer plagued by pain and misery, and I finally find myself living a life filled with happiness and comfort. (from Tom Lints)

I was having serious SI joint flares for a few months and was having a hard time working because of the pain and inability to walk very well. I then started physical therapy but was not able to do my exercises very well because of the pain. I heard about PRP and contacted the Michigan Center for Regenerative Medicine. I was able to get PRP done the next week and it was a life saver! I truly thought I was never going to be the same again. All the staff and Doctor Santa Ana were super kind and helpful during the procedure. I felt better right away and have not had a flare since the procedure. I am so thankful and recommend this to anyone with severe pain!

Answers to common questions about EMG testing. Your physician can address your specific situation during a consultation.

What does EMG stand for?

Electromyography, a test of how your nerves and muscles work together.

How is EMG different from an MRI?

MRI and X-rays show structure. EMG shows how nerves and muscles function.

Why would I need an EMG?

For persistent numbness, tingling, weakness, or radiating pain, especially when other tests have not found the cause.

What conditions can EMG help identify?

Pinched nerves in the neck or back, sciatica, carpal tunnel syndrome, nerve entrapment, peripheral neuropathy, and nerve injuries.

Who performs the test?

Board-certified physicians at our clinics perform and interpret EMG testing.

What happens after the test?

Your physician reviews the results with you and explains which treatments fit.

Is EMG covered by insurance?

EMG testing can usually be billed to insurance. Coverage depends on your plan.

Can EMG show whether pain comes from my spine?

Yes. EMG can help tell whether symptoms start in the spine or in the peripheral nerves.
