We’ll take a closer look at stem cell banking and the benefits it offers you at the Michigan Center for Regenerative Medicine.

What is Stem Cell Therapy and Stem Cell Banking?

Stem cell therapy is a modern regenerative medicine treatment that harnesses the power of stem cells to provide patients with a modern treatment option for a variety of medical conditions. Stem cell banking is the harvesting and storage of an individual’s stem cells for future stem cell therapies. Stem cells can be harvested from a variety of sources, but one of the most common and reputable sources is mesenchymal cells from bone marrow. Once these cells are harvested, they are processed and placed into long-term cryogenic storage. When a patient needs stem cell therapy treatments in the future, these cells can be taken out of storage and used for stem cell therapy treatments. Next, we’ll take a closer look at what makes stem cells so powerful and useful in medicine.

What Makes Stem Cells Useful in Regenerative Medicine?

Stem cells are very unique and have certain properties that are being researched for treatment options for a variety of chronic medical conditions. Some of the powerful properties of stem cells include:

  • Developing into specialized cells in the body
  • Supporting tissue repair and regeneration
  • Playing a role in immune system function

Because of these properties, stem cells are used for a variety of treatments, including several offered at the Michigan Center for Regenerative Medicine.

How Mesenchymal Stem Cells Are Harvested for Storing

Mesenchymal stem cells are a category of stem cells that are commonly harvested from bone marrow. The harvesting process is known as bone marrow aspiration and is a minimally invasive procedure. When you arrive for stem cell harvesting, you will lie down on your back as the posterior iliac crest of the pelvis is numbed with a local anesthetic. Once you are numbed, a specialized needle is inserted into the body to extract a small amount of bone marrow. This bone marrow is then placed into a device called a centrifuge that spins the bone marrow at high speeds and concentrates the stem cells. This process creates bone marrow aspirate concentrate, which contains stem cells and other healing components. These stem cells can then be placed into long-term storage for use later in stem cell therapies.
