How Does Stem Cell Harvesting Work?
Stem cell harvesting starts with an initial consultation with our medical team to determine if harvesting and storing your stem cells for future treatments makes sense for you. If approved for stem cell banking, you will undergo a minimally invasive procedure to procure your body’s stem cells. Your doctor will advise you of the steps to take before harvesting your stem cells, such as avoiding certain medications, staying hydrated before the procedure, and arranging for transportation if anesthesia is to be used.
Typically, stem cells are harvested from the body’s hip bones using bone marrow aspiration. Most procedures take less than one hour, and your doctor can advise you on your total recovery time, which typically lasts only one to seven days. Once harvested, your stem cells will be prepared for storage for future regenerative medicine treatments.
How Are Stem Cells Stored?
After your stem cells have been harvested, they will be prepared for banking by testing for viability and sterility before cryopreservation. Stem cells will be frozen using modern controlled-rate freezing to prevent damage to the cells during cryofreezing and prepare them for long-term storage. Stem cells harvested from bone marrow can be stored for several decades, with many studies showing that, when properly prepared, they remain viable nearly indefinitely.
